Virtual Machine
VMware is a company specializing in the development of software for virtualization and cloud computing. Such software allows the hardware elements of a single computer to be divided into several virtual machines (VMS), each of which has its own operating system.
Virtualization increases the efficiency of an organization’s existing computer equipment, which also allows for an increase in the number of users served. VMware virtualization technologies are based on the open source ESX/ESXi hypervisor in x86 architecture.
What is a virtual machine?
A virtual machine, or VM, is a computing resource used by software instead of a physical computer. Virtual machines can be used to deploy applications and run programs. In addition, VMs can securely access virus-infected data.
The VMware hypervisor is responsible for separating guest operating systems, allowing them to run independently of each other. The second type of hypervisor, used in VMware Workstation, allows you to run one operating system on top of the host.
There are two types of virtual machines:
- process-based — allow separate processes to be executed on the host machine;
- system — perform full virtualization and replace the physical computer.
Advantages of VMware
Installing VMware tools improves the performance of graphics data, including 3D, and allows you to create and use shared folders between guest and host operating systems. VMware is most often used when companies need to run multiple operating systems on a single server.
The main advantages of VMware are:
- increased flexibility and efficiency of data center systems;
- increased return on investment compared to other VMs;
- a wide range of additional services and products from VMware;
- security based on a zero-trust model;
- lower operating costs for customers;
- rapid launch of applications and resources.
