Firewall

A firewall is a hardware and software system that filters local and incoming traffic according to the parameters previously set by the administrator. The main purpose of using a firewall is to protect information from intruders and filter traffic.

Firewall is a complex protection, which is considered mandatory for any corporate network. In addition to traffic filtering, firewall has another important function – protection of confidential data from leakage, as well as protection from unauthorized access to the network malware.

Auxiliary (secondary) functions of a firewall screen may include:

Firewall capabilities

A firewall is used for:

  1. Filtering traffic, blocking applications that attempt to access unprotected system services.
  2. Prevent unauthorized access to data by intruders and stop attempts to send confidential information.
  3. Providing access control to network equipment and ports.
  4. Logging within the network and recording application/hardware activity in the statistics.
  5. Sending notifications when suspicious activity or attempts to attack the enterprise network are detected.
  6. Sending notifications when suspicious activity or attempts to attack the enterprise network are detected.

On its own, a firewall is not able to guarantee full protection of network equipment from malware and malicious activity. A firewall is not an alternative to antivirus software.

The greatest effectiveness of the firewall can be ensured when it works in conjunction with other defense mechanisms (hardware and software). Firewall and antivirus are very different from each other in terms of their working principle:

  1. A firewall can detect and remove virus software that is already present on the computer.
  2. Antivirus, on the other hand, prevents malicious programs from entering the computer.
  3. Antivirus is an antivirus that prevents malicious programs from entering the computer.

Technologies of hacking and data interception in networks are constantly evolving, and solutions to protect against them are lagging behind in development. Therefore, in any corporate network it is necessary to organize a comprehensive protection of confidential data in order to get the maximum effect from it.

When choosing a specific type of firewall, you should be based specifically on your requirements and the types of equipment used.
